Preview: New Theatre Shows In English At Katona Theatre Budapest

With a superb cast and internationally acclaimed directors, Katona József Theatre is one of the major art theatres in Hungary. Katona stages classic Hungarian and international drama, as well as a selection of contemporary plays. In late November Katona offers a series of programmes with English subtitles featuring the following productions.

Étienne Méhul (1763–1817), one of the most significant and influential opera composers during the French revolution and the politically turbulent decades thereafter, wrote some forty works for musical theatre. Enjoying the confidence of his friend and rival Luigi Cherubini, and even of Napoleon, Méhul expanded the range of themes adaptable to the opera genre, enriching its musical landscape.
