The introduction of an electronic road haulage tracking system and the mandatory connection of tills to the tax office have raised the Hungarian state’s revenue by 420 billion forints (EUR 1.35bn) over two years, the economy ministry said. The road haulage tracking system and electronic tills have not only raised direct tax revenues, they have also boosted revenues from excise fees and fines.

According to Hungarian investigative journalism portal Átlátszó.hu, the 2017 FINA World Championships to be hosted in Budapest in 2017 will cost Hungarian taxpayers at least HUF 90 billion (USD 323 million), of which HUF 52 billion (USD 192 million) is to be spent this year alone.

Over 520,000 retail bank accounts have been wound up since the introduction of the transaction tax in 2013, business daily Világgazdaság reported. Citing National Bank of Hungary data, the paper said that there were 9.32 million private individual bank accounts at the end of last year, the lowest number since the bank started tracking this kind of data in 2010.
