Food retail turnover in Hungary grew by 2.5% in the second quarter of 2016 compared to the corresponding quarter of the previous year, a consumer research analysis by Nielsen shows, as reported yesterday by online portal index.hu. The increase in turnover at retailers was apparently due to price hikes, as the actual amount of sold decreased 0.2%, Nielsen said.

Large retailers have recovered from the drop in revenue caused by Sunday shopping restrictions, the daily Magyar Nemzet said on Wednesday. Since the restrictions were lifted in April, turnover has rebounded. Retail chain Spar told the paper that 9 percent of revenue is generated on Sundays.

Retail sales in Hungary went up by an annual 6.8% in May, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) said, confirming data published in a first reading earlier. Retail sales rose by an annual 5.7% when adjusted for calendar year effects. The pace accelerated from an unadjusted 5.0% and slowed from a calendar year-adjusted 6.7% rise in April.
