A total of 329 new titles will be on show at the 86th annual Book Week, which begins on Thursday, Book Publishers and Distributors Association president László Péter Zentai, told reporters yesterday. Book store chain Libri is recruiting staff to its new units, which will take over 12 outlets of its competitor Alexandra in shopping malls around the country, HVG reports. Klepierre, operator of the shopping malls, approached Libri because it wanted a stable company as a tenant.

Hungarians are less satisfied with their quality of life than the EU average, according to a survey by Eurostat, the EU statistics office. Those interviewed were asked to rank various aspects of their life on a scale of one to ten. Overall, the EU average was 7.1, while that for Hungary was 6.2, level with Greece, Cyprus and Portugal.

Publishers from 24 countries have bought the rights to film director Péter Gárdos’s novel Hajnali láz (“Fever at Dawn”) the story of how his parents met and fell in love in 1945. After surviving the Holocaust, Miklós Gárdos was in a Swedish refugee camp when he asked for a list of Hungarian Jewish girls who were also temporarily housed in Sweden.

The Capital Court of Appeals is expected to issue its verdict today in the trial on war crimes charges of Communist-era interior minister Béla Biszku. According to the indictment Biszku, now 94, took part in running the law enforcement agency after the 1956 Uprising was crushed. Members of the agency fired on civilians, killing three at Nyugati train station on December 6, 1956.
