Retail Sales Growth Accelerates To 6% In May

Retail sales in Hungary climbed an annual 6% in May, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) said in a second reading of data. Retail sales rose by 5.5% when adjusted for calendar year effects. The pace of retail sales growth accelerated from an unadjusted and adjusted 3.2% and 1.8%, respectively, in April. Retail sales growth in May was highest since June 2016.

The European Commission recommends that Hungary in 2017 and 2018 pursue its fiscal policy in line with the requirements of the preventive arm of the Stability and Growth Pact, which translates into a substantial fiscal effort for 2018, the EC said in its draft country-specific recommendation published on Monday.

Consumer prices in Hungary grew by an annual 2.7% in March, slowing from 2.9% in February, the Central Statistical Office said. Emerging market analysts in London had forecast headline inflation between 2.8% and 3.3%. KSH department head Borbála Minarik attributed the slower pace mainly to the monthly decrease of fuel and tobacco prices.
