It’s been 150 years since Hungary’s very first zoo, the Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden in the heart of the capital opened its gates to the public on August 9, 1866, writes hvg.hu. It was back at the end of the 18th century that the first public zoos were opened in Western Europe, the zoo in Vienna, for instance, began welcoming visitors in 1780.

Reconstruction works have begun on Hungary’s second-largest and the world’s fourth-biggest synagogue in the city of Szeged in southern Hungary after the government appropriated HUF 950 million (USD 3.39m) to the renovation of the crumbling 1340-seat Jewish place of worship.

Fidesz was again the big winner in Sunday’s local elections, with Jobbik claiming second place, as the ruling party retained control of all 19 county councils as well as Budapest and most of its districts. The left-wing parties were able to mayoralties in only a few places while Jobbik was second in almost every county. LMP candidates won a few seats on local councils.
Hungary’s Parliamentary Committee Calls Ukraine Situation “Dramatic”
