The retail authority MKEH has withdrawn the licence of travel agency Korzika Holidays, leaving 33 travellers stranded abroad. The company had little capital and ran into a difficult situation. The tourists will return to Hungary with the help of the agency’s guarantee deposit. Korzika could not keep up with recent changes in travelling patterns, CEO Sándor Zsila observed.

The tax authority NAV announced that it will check whether landlords are paying taxes on accommodation offered via airbnb and other popular holiday rental sites. Tax officials will rent rooms and apartments as part of the investigation. The number of places available for rent in Budapest via airbnb has shot up from 1,500 last December to 7,000 today.

Only euros and Croatian kuna will be accepted by motorway toll booths in Croatia from June 1, the Rijeka daily Novi List reports, citing a decision by Croatian motorway company HAC made at the end of April. As a result no Hungarian forint can be used any more. Bank cards will be accepted.

Le Meridien hotel in downtown Budapest will be taken over by the Ritz-Carlton group next year, Turizmus Online reported. The change was announced at the Arab Tourism Fair in Dubai, and was confirmed by Simone Dulies, CEO of the Budapest hotel.

A 168-room, five-star hotel will be opened in the former Ballet Institute across from the Opera House on Andrássy út in December 2017, according to CEO Zaiki el Guiziri of project company QPR Properties. The Dreschler Palace building, which hosted the ballet institute during the Communist era, has been empty for nearly 20 years.

Low cost airline Wizz Air is asking Malév Ground Handling to stop outsourcing the checking of cabin baggage at Budapest’s international airport, as the subcontractor Budport is taking too strict an approach. Wizz Air passengers are complaining that baggage is being rejected if it is only slightly oversized.
