The number of guest nights spent in Hungarian hotels and guesthouses went up by an annual 3.8% to 2,247,000 in May, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) said. Tourism has proven successful as one of the driving forces of the national economy: between 1 January and 31 May, 3.4 million tourists spent a total of 7.9 million guest nights at commercial accommodation establishments.

Four Hungarian regions have been included on a list of the EU’s twenty poorest regions, compiled by Eurostat on the basis of a comparison of regions’ GDP per capita on 2013 price levels to the EU-28 average for that year.
