On this National Holiday, also known locally as 'the day of the dead' (Halottak Napja), all main shops and public offices are closed. Traditionally, instead of celebrating 'Halloween', Hungarians head to the cemeteries for All Soul's Day - also known as All Hallows Tide, All-Hallomas, or All Hallows' Day.

If there was any doubt in your mind that Hungarians are individualists – a spirit somewhat dampened by history in the last century, but which is flowing back – you have only to walk the streets of Budapest where no two buildings appear to have been built in exactly the same style.

If you think about it, Hungarians are not the only people to be partial to lions, as they are like book ends on gateposts of villas in suburbia and guardians of monuments all over the world. Everywhere you go there are crests and doorknockers and gargoyles and fountains with the Lion King theme.
